Project Breakdown

Brief

Contraxis is a 2.5D action arcade game where you trace loops around enemies using your mouse or drawing tablet. Defeating an enemy captures them, allowing you to reuse them as assists against other increasingly difficult enemies as you level up.

Project Goals

Within the month of August, I sprinted to get a good demo out on the Steam store by October.

After taking a pivot from focusing on Investments, I aim to release the full game in Q2 2026.

Design

Trace Mechanic

To deal damage to enemies, you have to trace a shape around them with your mouse. This was honestly the hardest thing to code but was worth the unique gameplay it provided.

I was inspired off of the mechanic from the Pokémon Rangers Franchise and wanted to bring this unique mechanic to a modern audience in the form of quick fun

Assist System

Once you defeat an enemy, you are allowed to summon them as a one time assist.

I felt this mechanic would help out people who are struggling tracing, alongside spicing up the moment to moment gameplay.

Shops & Upgrades

Halfway through a map and right before a boss battle, the player will have access to a shop to upgrade their run.

 

The player needs to feel some kind of progression, so I introduced a shop that has purchasable upgrades.
